Telephone Mic Element for Vocal Mic

Pro studio recording equipment and music production/industry.

A buddy in a band wants me to cook up a microphone for a unique sound... He's thinking of taking a mic element from an old telephone and using it for vocals. I guess the limited freq reponse and dynamic range will offer a cool sound.
Anyway, any tips or tricks for setting this up for use into a board or PA? Use 1 hot and shield? get a small transformer? Any other things I should be concerned with?
