Hi PdL,"1. 24/96 files will take up A LOT of space on your computer's hard drive...
3. in order to burn hi-rez audio you will need some type of software. a lot of folks make DAD's (bascially a DVD w/o the video) that can be played back on most DVD players or on a laptop (or a PC.) i think you need to burn at 48 kHz for this, although i might be mistaken...Yes, they take up a lot of space but nowadays hard drives are hugh. After using them to create the finished disks, the files can always be offloaded to DVD-R for the long term, allowing the space on the hard drive to be reclaimed.
The DVD Video standard accommodates 96/24 files, so there is no need to burn at 48k for DADs. Moving the filtering up an octave makes for better sound and may well be the real reason 96 sounds so much better than lower sampling rates.
Happy Listening!
