Mitsubishi X850 - digital connections

This is a narrow nitch of a question:
Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of digitally interfacing with a Mitsubishi X850 32 track recorder? It has digital I/Os on D-sub connectors, but this 1985 technology is pre TDIF and AES/EBU digital standards.
The digital info is PCM. Would it be a matter of correct pin outs to convert to TDIF or AES?
Any info or direction would be greatly appreciated.
