Hi.I have one of these in my system with a Phase Linear 2000 mkII preamp & Marantz 510R power amp. The problem with hooking it up to the preamp outs is that as you turn the volume on your preamp up & down, you're changing the level that the bass unit is able to process. If you hook it up as you would an equalizer, through the tape loop, the signal will remain constant and at a much higher level to the unit. Then the unit will be able to properly process the signal. Also, there are a lot of variables to adjusting the thing for the right sound. Once you get it set, it's a "set & forget" kind of thing. Your best bet is to adjust it for a subtle enhancement of only the lowest bass frequencies. More than that, and it will sound like crap. Properly set, it's excellent for rock, pop, etc., but I'd hit the "bypass" button for acoustic jazz & classical. I'm using mine with a set of Polk Monitor 10s. I was going to buy a sub for the system, but the sub-$300 models I listened to from Yamaha & KLH weren't all that great. Since the Polks had good bass to begin with and I just wanted a little boost, I tried this unit & am very happy with the result.
Good luck!
