Re: Stax omega II, Grado RS-1 , ultrasone HiFi 650 , Sennheiser 650

I own the Stax Omega II headphones (tube amplifier/interface). They have an amazingly clear, resonance-free sound. Sharp transients come and go with such blinding speed, you quickly realize that almost everything else has a lot of stored energy (i.e., they are resonating).

However, these phones can sound very thin and bright. There is no upper bass or lower midrange bloat to sweeten up the sound. With my electronics, they can sound a bit sterile and cold. I use a solid-state preamplifier (Levinson Ref. No. 32), that is a bit rounded off and bland sounding, and even then, it is not an ideal match. The best I've heard, is my phones hooked up to an Audionote system that had a $35,000 linestage and a $55,000 DAC and a god-knows-what $$ phono system. I bet they would sound good with a very smooth and romantic linestage, like the Cary SL98, but then, I would not like the sound when playing through my speakers.

For a more balanced and less tweaky electrostatic phone, consider the Koss phones (model No. 950?). Also look at the AKG-1000s, a dynamic phone which I think sounds better than the Sennheisers. One of the best dynamic phones I've heard was a $500 pair of Sony phones that hasn't been in production for some time (about 3-4 years).
