Hi Bill,"Marketing-wise speakers for the home are over-hyped to appeal to the uninformed and ill-educated in the audio arts, while monitors are advertised with a 'just the facts, m'aam' approach that is far more effective with the professional community.
This is more than a bit of a generalization. Though I understand what you mean it is far from true of all the manufacturers making speakers "for the home".
Over the years I've heard way too many so-called "professional monitors" that feature exactly the "over-hyped to appeal to the uninformed and ill-eductaed in the audio arts" character you are speaking of. And, in my experience, they often do.
With the best high performance gear, the line between "home" and "pro" has been successfully blurred. Many of my colleagues in the pro mastering world use "home" speakers (as well as other "home" components) as the reference in their mastering rooms.
