thanks, I've consulted with an AEA tech....more

An AEA tech emailed me back today about his recommendations. He said overall to look for a very low noise ratio...to look for noise figures like EIN (equivalent input noise) < -128dBu,and input impedance > 1.2 kOhms to be compatible with the AEA R84's. He said my Presonus tubePre's were really not suitable, which didn't surprise me!

Specifically the preamps that he personally liked and recommended were...on the low end, the Symetrix Audio 302 preamp which he said is a very quiet, very clean two channel solid-state preamp for around $300. However, the preamp he really liked overall on the high end is the FetCode preamp by Forssell Technologies , which runs $2700 but has a very low noise ratio.
I looked on the Forssell website and it seemed that their design is a combined FET technology along with tubes to create a warm class A preamp with low enough noise to be compatible with the low noise requirements of ribbon or dynamic mic recording. These preamps have a 48v phantom switch, but it seems that the DC holding capacitor is switched out of the input when the 48v option is switched in the "off" position. I'm not sure if I can afford this one at this time but it looks to be a very good preamp choice for ribbons.

Thanks again for your response and help!!
