It is best to reserve a special input that has no PHANTOM power wired to it for ribbon mics unless it is a NEW powered ribbon with an op amp inside. Some mixers that have switches to turn on and off the phantom power are wired not to let the electrolytic capacitor discharge effectively and there may be some leakage DC sitting there ready to discharge when you plug your precious ribbon mic in. Don't take a chance with this. I'm sure the designers of the R84 have taken this into consideration and it may be safer than the original RCAs. Also on some vintage gear that have the original vintage UTC or ADC or Triad input transformers, NEVER try to use phantom power with them. These in most cases are 1:10 ratio or greater transformers. Do you realize what 48 volts on the primary will be on the secondary >2Killovolts! These transformers are not wound perfectly, there is always some leakage! GR
