I do not oppose what you are saying about cassette and DBX, and of course you are correct. However, most engineers when creating the final mix for CD are so engrossed at maximising the effects of signal to noise that they compress out (peak limit) most of the dynamic range. This peak limiting makes it even easier for a DBX cassette to record this signal well.Admittedly, on acoustic, classical and a lot of jazz cds this is not the case. Unfortunatly it is the case on most current popular cds.
If the objective of the original poster is to find a cheap, effective and reliable way of doing multi track recording in the field, he cannot go wrong with the Tascam 424.
