While I agree that both media are "adequate", there are degrees of "adequate". I don't know what you're using to listen but I can tell a cassette, especially one with dbx, blindfolded, 100% of the time. I would classify the difference between the sonic potential as compared to CD as quite large and quite easily audible.

Cassette cannot approach CD in terms of dynamic range or pitch correctness in the bass. DBX smears the signal in time and obliterates spatial cues and reverb tails in addition to altering musical timbre. It results in a harsh, glare-filled upper midrange that gives itself away every time, even on a car system.

That said, if you don't hear any difference, significant or otherwise, then perhaps a high speed cassette with dbx is all you need.
