My understanding is that the earliest units came with SCMS (copy protection) enabled, and that since then it has been agreed with interested industry parties that the unit should be allowed to ship with SCMS disabled. Tascam has instructions on its website on how to disable SCMS on its early units. You can download the manual for this unit from their website, too, which should put your mind at rest. This is the only difference between units that can use any type of CDR media and those requiring "music only" discs. The CDRW2000 has greater input/output flexibility (word clock, AES/EBU, balanced analogue inputs), which may be the reason for the "professional" moniker.
