Does anyone know anything about the Tascam nearfield power amps?http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3010223130&category=21166
I have a Tascam PA-20B (like the one above) and I was wondering if anyone thought it might be worth tweaking a little and using in a mid-fi home system.
It has RCA and XLR balanced inputs and it is bridgable.
I would either pick up another amp (I have a source for one cheap) and use two bridged (50wpc) as monoblocks or I would use one (at a fairly stout 20wpc).
I would like to replace whatever internal wiring I can and remove which ever input I don't use. I would also remove the bridging circut if I didn't use it and have to replace the cheap spring clips with binding posts. (The Cat 5 speaker cables don't quite fit!)
I think I would use these with a bottlehead foreplay line stage and a pair of fairly nice (Peerless/Dayton/McIntosh)DIY bookshelfs. My main input is a Technics TT with Grado Prestige Black cart and upgraded interconnects. DIY Cat 5 cables.
I am interested because I already have the amp. But if it really isn't worth it I would rather sell it and buy something else (although I am on a tight budget.)
Things I like about the amp are that it has balanced inputs. has a protection circut. And the internals seem to be very solidly built. HUGE power supply and giant heat sink fill more than half the inside of the half-hieght half-width case. Caps are faily big and the PCB seems simple.
Any advice? Experience with these amps?
Thanks in Advance,
ShaneB
