budget small diaphragm condensor opinions

hi,
i am looking for a pair of inexpensive small diaphragm cardioid condesor mics for taping my bands live performances on to a dat through a small auxillary mixer.
battery power is a must (no phantom power on mixer).
doing this for band performance critiquing only (nothing to be released)
have been using sm57's but the sound is hollow and just plain aweful. i have been looking at the shure pg81's. i can get them for $99 a mic with cord.
any other suggestions, or anything cheaper?
we play amplified music, nothing acoustic.
