In Reply to: Anyone heard of the Shure 58 microphones U2 uses? Any good? posted by Jick on September 21, 2000 at 06:34:44:
Some quick lessons :The Shure SM58 is a vocal performance microphone rather than a precision recording microphone. Artist use them live on stage, because they are rugged, (can take a slam, or drop), they sound pretty good, and experienced vocalist use hand compression..(pulling the mic away from their mouth on loud passages of vocals, and putting them up close, on soft passages). Putting a mic up close increases Bass response (proximity effect) and screens out other incoming noise.
Compression : ( not to be confused with digital data compression MP3..etc.)
Compression (Dynamic)is making the loud sounds softer, and the soft sounds louder, to "Compress" dynamic range of the human voice, so all words soft and loud can be heard and understood, even while loud music is playing along with it...(usually compressed as well).
To translate terms of Pro- to non Pro, is what this forum is all about. To take professional knowledge, and explain it in a way that non-pros can learn and use, to their benifit, to hopefully bring the Audio community, and Professional Audio community, closer, so maybe both can understand each other, and perhaps the recording arts, and audiophile community can benifit in ways to improve both sectors.
Next answer :
Bono happens to have so much volume on his voice, that he is able to distort many precision microphones ( I guess he hasn't tryed B&K's), and since he is familiar with 58's, and knows how to use them, if it makes him more comfortable in the recording studio...then confortable artist yield better results in creativity.
Trying to defend the microphone against all noise is a way of gating (not letting)the microphone against music , so as little music as possible does not get into the microphone, spoiling the overall effect of the sound. If bono likes to sing with control monitors blaring at him, instead of headphones, then the engineer has to do whatever it takes to keep the artist comfortable, and also have a good production. You have a hard time telling Bono, he can't do that...he knows what he wants to do, and you work around that.
When he says, "does not do much to the voice...just add a little compression"...that means he does not equalize the vocals, just cuts dynamics a shade more to hear all the words and vibe. They do this during mixdown, long after Bono..is on a plane to neverland. In summary, the 58's are a reference standard stage microphone. It is cheap (120.00) hold up very well, and is expendable, if someone goes mad...and puts one inside the toilet, and flushes it.
57's and 58, have been used for many years, and are amongst the most widely used for LOUD stage acts, because of their ennunciation, and noise rejection properties.
I hope I have answered all your questions thoroughly on this topic...let me know if I can fill in anymore gaps.
