Re: cable noise

130.199.3.3

I just ran into the same type of problem. I ran 4 pa setups in a building for tours. The mike cables made noises when I moved them. I thought I had a bad cable, but all the cables did it! After some head scratching, I realized the sound out of the speaker was the exact same sound the cables made as they hit the floor!. The building was used for testing superconducting magnets (liquid helium, 5 tesla fields, 50 thousand pound magnets). Every piece of iron around, including the rebar in the concrete floor, had some residual magnetism. Hitting the mike cables causes the internal conductors to jar and move with respect to each other, and there was enough magnetic flux between the twisted pair within to be microphonic. All my runs were balanced, with good quality cable. Preamps also had very good cmmr.
