PowerBook G3 Based Home Studio

I'm going to be upgrading my home studio where I've been using a PowerBook G3 400MHz w/ OS 8.6, 128MB, OMS, Vision DSP, MIDISport 2x2, Kurzweil PC88MX, AKG C1000S, and any old mixer. I've upgraded my OS to 9.1 and OMS is not compatible! Not to mention that the future of Opcode is unclear, even though Gibson bought them out, I think. So it looks like I'm switching to FreeMIDI. Anyway, I'd also like to switch to digital audio, but my PowerBook doesn't have FireWire. Apple put in FireWire about two months after I got mine :-(
So I was thinking of either getting a FireWire PC card, or, something I just heard about, the Digigram VX Pocket v2. If I go with the VX Pocket v2, I'll need to get DP or Cubase because both would use the ASIO drivers to record audio at 24bits. ProTools would use SoundManager and only record at 16bits. I am on a fairly tight budget, so Cubase would certainly be cheapest. But what should I get for a D/A? Would I need a digital mixer if I went with Cubase, or are its mixing capabilities decent? Incidentally, the VX Pocket v2 will handle only stereo digital I/O.

To sum up:
1. Is the Digigram VX Pocket v2 a good option, or should I just get a FireWire PC card?
2. What is my best option for D/A?
3. Best option for software?

On another note, I'm thinking of getting a pair of Yamaha MS60S powered speakers to serve double duty as studio monitors and as a PA for the few times I play out. Any thoughts?

Thanks!!!
Dan
