good digital recorder as base for mod

Pro studio recording equipment and music production/industry.

I'm wondering if someone can recommend a digital recorder (USB or firewire) that is good for the price and is a good base for a mod. Maybe under $500 for the stock unit. I'm thinking of having Igor at K Works do the mod.. he seems to be able to mod anything.
