300 watt RMS speakers with 600 watt amp?

Its a long story.

I bought 2x Gemini GSM3250 cabs (dual 15" subs, 4 tweets, and a horn. rated for 300 watts rms 1200 watts peak). You can get em new for 150ish so they are dirt cheap. One arrived in the mail and the other was on back order. I already had my amp so I hooked it up with the one cab. The amp is a Behringer EQ1200 600 watts per channel.

I ran with just the one cab for a few days at VERY low gain. Never put it above 1/4 max gain.

One morning I was listening to it and all of a sudden I heard a loud POP sound that almost knocked me out of my chair. The pop was followed by a constant hum or buzz. I disconnected all audio sources from the amp, and I still got the buzz so I returned the amp as BEH said it must be a faulty component (in the amp).

After a few weeks I got my 2nd cab and a new BEH amp. I hooked it all up and the speaker the pop was heard from was blaring really bad. Especially on bass notes. I figured it was blown by the bad amp so I'm having it replaced.

That particular cab had some issues from day one though. When we were unpacking it, it had something rattling/loose inside. Also one of the handles was on upside down.

So here is what I am wondering...

1. Was it a faulty component in the amp that caused the pop and buzzing?
2. Was 600 watts just too much for the speaker, causing it to blow without my knowledge, thus changing the ohms , and legitimately fry a good amp?
3. I've heard the rule is the amp can be 2x the wattage of the cab if you're not pushing it too hard. But maybe its not the case for these extreme cheap Chinese models?

I just don't want the 2nd cab to get here, and I blow up the amp again. Maybe I should just buy a 600 watt amp?

Thanks
-x
