It's been a few years since I've had a radio show, even if it had few listeners. Going to the station once a week to play what I wanted was like a kind of therapy. So yesterday, I went and picked up the start of a DJ setup:
Numark CDN25 dual CD player
Numark CM100 4 channel mixer
Road case with rack mount in it
Technics 1200mk's are on their way when used ones come in.
Amp/Monitors/Active monitors to come later.
For what I'm spending I certainly don't expect the best. However, I think I should expect a little better than bottom-of-the barrel sound for anything labelled "professional."
The mixer has a high noise floor. The switches and knobs make audible clunks when operated - at least through the headphone out. I'm used to a radio console (Wheatstone board) that is dead silent.
The CD player sounds like the worst of digital. I think my 1986 Fisher was at least a little exciting to listen to by comparison. It hasn't had break-in-time really, but I still expected better out of the box.
The question is: What am I to expect from "DJ gear?" A lot of it looks like it's designed to appeal to kids and wanna-be club DJ's. I'm neither. I just want good quality. But, I can't afford the Denon/Pioneer stuff.
Any suggestions?
