Volumio uses Music Player Daemon 'MPD'.

If you strictly want to use MPD, then MoOde and Max2Play might be your only options for 'free' players.

If you are open to squeezelite then piCorePlayer might be your best bet.

If you want a variety of players to choose from in one OS then Dietpi is a great option.

piCorePlayer and Dietpi are pretty rock solid in terms of being glitch-free and both have pretty good support forums.
