RPI - new long term kernel 6.12 soon out

Hi.

The RPI kernel folks are currently working on porting all stuff from kernel 6.6 to 6.12. 6.12 had been declared a LongTermSupport (2Y) version by Linus Torvalds.

In layman terms, the Linux kernel is like the brainware of a Linux-based computer.
No hardware and application software would work without it.

For the nerds out there: Preliminary versions can already get installed with "sudo rpi-update next". (I haven't tested it myself though)

I prepared and installed my own optimized custom version though. And this works nicely. And. No exhausting problems with my Allo HATs this time.

6.12. is quite a step ahead once more. Beside tons of common stuff updates and enhancements, lot of RPi related stuff is now part of the mainline kernel.
Which first of all reduces workload for the RPi folks and hopefully - that's for us - improves the RPi software quality even further.

And for me the greatest 6.12 kernel thing since almost 20 years:

The realtime kernel patch is fully integrated and accessible through the kernel config menu (menuconfig). No more patching.

For audio related stuff it would still need a custom kernel to go realtime. But. It can be quite easy configured now.
For me, a real-time kernel still provides an edge over a standard kernel. A realtime kernel provides shortest task latencies. This has some impact on my audio performance. However. To use its (full) rt-potential the whole system and application layer needs to be tuned accordingly. Just booting such a kernel will not have much of an impact, if any at all.

Enjoy.
