Okay, I understand the benefits of the simplest possible OS and hardware. I still don't understand what is needed overall. Let's say I have a Raspberry Pi. Does that take input from the network and send it to the DAC? It doesn't have an interface itself to allow choosing the music to play (like Foobar2000)? Another computer is needed to send the file to the Raspberry Pi?
I am not within Ethernet cable range of the router, so the files would have to go over WiFi. Does that affect the sound quality?
What are my options for the software that allows me to browse and select the file to play? I'll say one thing: it has to have a column browser with 4 columns (genre, artist, composer, and album) and list files or albums as text in a single row so I can scan my eyes quickly over it. I find the interfaces that present a huge list of albums in a grid format, with large pictures and tiny text, to be unusable.
So, I'm used to Foobar2000 running on the NUC itself, so I'm not sure what my other options are.
Thanks.
