10,000,000 Ipods will be sold this year.
2,000 USB DACs
500 USB DACs that have direct I2S (no conversion to SPDIF) to a very specific market who actually knows this much about the inner workings of their DAC and PC Drivers. What I am driving at is that although mass-marketed consumer electronics are cheap ($279 for a hi-res 19" flat screen monitor), but high-end purpose built devices sold in far fewer numbers are going to be pricey. It all comes down to unit cost.
I think when a guy like Gordon Rankin builds "the best USB DAC he can build" and puts it in the nicest possible enclosure he can dream up, you gotta see that as a VALUE in high end for $1300. Sure, you can probably get a USB->I2S kit or "ABS plastic" box version somewhere for $500. But I think in Gordon's defense, he is targeting the audiophile market where craftsmanship and beauty are valued as much as sound quality.
It's about what you value.
Me, I'm more about SQ than bling. I can't afford to drop $1000 to $2000 on every "magic box" I would like to own - there are just far too many of them! Now, if I was putting together a high-buck system and it was being built AROUND a top notch USB DAC, then Gordon's USB DAC would be a no brainer.
Cheers,
Presto
