I don't know if this will exactly resolve your situation, but one thing to note about iTunes, is that the audio goes through the QuickTime engine. So another place to check settings is in the QuickTime control panel. When you open the control panel (QuickTime Preferences) select the "Audio" tab. Under "Devices" you have the option to use DirectSound or WaveOut. If you check "Safe mode" then it will use WaveOut, if it is unchecked then it uses DirectSound. Try both ways to see if it makes a difference.Hope this helps!
