Cause MS Operation Systems while using the Intel AC97 standard does not provide the same signal out that comes into it from a ripped audio file. Therefore it does not matter what you do to the signal it is already changed quite a bit from what you start with, a simple digital 44.1 kHz 16 bit CD audio file. Why worry about the volume when it is not longer what was recorded? Fractional upsampling is not pretty; that is, upsampling from 44.1 to 48 which is the output of the AC97 codex. Again if you are going to use your on-board sound chip and intel codex your are hosed.I don't know much but what little I do know is you are going to have to work with an external USB/Firewire device or a different sound card if you can fit one into your new computer to get a true SPDIF signal out of your computer.
