In my quest for a noiseless computer I sunk my external Seagate 400GB hard drive into 40 lbs of concrete. I put the SATA drive into a external shell with USB and eSATA connections. I removed the part that slides over the drive and added copper fins for cooling before incasing in concrete. The eSATA connection allows me to use it as my main hard drive for the computer with out sacrificing speed. The end result is all I can hear is very faint clicks when the drive is accessing data. No sizzle or vibrations anymore. The hard drive reports it is 41 C which is a couple degrees hotter then when it was inside my computer.
Next time I will water-cool the drive first, incase it in foam then concrete. That should make it cooler and make it totally noiseless.
Fun stuff, give it a try.
