USB input - Strange !

I bought a BES Audio DAC with usb input limited to 48/16. It doesn't sound any good compared to the same music from a Sont transport.
So, I upsampled in Foobar to 88.2/32 from 441./16 with src, outputting in Direct Sound 2. The thing works and the sound at hf improves.
For the hell of it, I upsampled to 176.4k and the thing still worked with hf further improving.
What is going on? Is WinXP resampling somehow? Or do I have a magic usb dac?
