Just a clarification here. Not all upsampling is asynchronous sample rate conversion. In fact most upsamling is not asynchronous at all.If you use any of the software upsampling modules available on the PC the upsampling is synchronous and deterministic. Exapmples of this mode would be the many popular resamler available for foobar.
Asynchronous resampling requires the existence of a independent clock domain which is usually done in hardware inside some DACs.
The only asychronous software sample rate converter for the PC that I am aware of is embedded in the reclock package and it is only being used to synchronize the frequency difference between the crystals on the video card and sound card in a computer.
