Seems like if you can't tell a difference, you should just use whichever is more convenient? But from a technical point of view, I doubt many of us have enough info to know for sure since we don't know what precision itunes uses in its calculations. If it's at least 24-bits like most, then you could probably drop the volume by about 24dB before significant losses would be noticeable. A volume control working with only 16 bits would incur immediate losses as the other poster mentions, but I doubt there are any programs doing that nowadays. All digital volume control involves something like a digital filter so they will degrade the sound to a certain extent, but it may not be significant. Do whatever works best for now, and revisit it on occasion to experiment, but ideally many of us would probably not use the itunes control if we already had a quality preamp in the chain. And of course, any digital volume change recalculates the data so you lose your bit perfect data and any encoding like HDCD.
