Re: Make me go PC source........

this is covered here very regularly - just read some of the posts on the topics below - search some threads.

You can certainly use a modern laptop - you will need one with USB or Ethernet outs or with WiFi 802.11g (centrino chip). You may want to up the RAM if you are going to plan on being able to listen and do much else

You will have to choose between a number of options for how you will compress (must be to a lossless format) and manage your library. I am a Mac guy so I can't really speak to all the nuance of EAC/FLAC/Foobar but you can find plenty about that here. A lot of it is freeware.

You will either need a USB to DAC, a USB DAC or a Squeezebox (stock or modded). Nice choices in all of these for $1K or less. Choice will in part be about where you want to put the laptop relative to your listening environment.

Squeezebox (from Slim Devices, commonly referred to as SB on this board) offers more choices as well as the option of going wireless (WiFi 802.11) Practical working distance for a USB cable is 15' though there is a lot of buzz about some new fiber optical USB gear that has a lot more range and from all accounts sounds great.

Eventually you will run out of hard drive space on your laptop and need an external hard drive (either firewire or USB2). More accurately you will need two - one as a backup.

That's about it. Figure a stock SB at $250, some free software, a pair of ICs which you probably have lying around and you can check it out. The SB volume control is very workable and does not degrade the sound so you can go straight in to the amp
