The Benchmark DAC-1 is a SPDIF DAC that has mutiple inputs, a volume control and a headphone jack. USB may ( may.....) be better in theory, but I'm not convinced that for $1K there's anyone who can beat the DAC1. I run the DAC1 from an inexpensive turtle beach digital out and am very happy with it. ( into Arcam/Martin Logan).
Another advantage is that you can drive it from a CD or DVD player and the computer without swaping cables. And, it's built like a piece of pro equipment, which it is!
Choose a DAC that sounds good. Not one that has the 'right' technology. Implementation is important!
Stereophile rates it class A.Bob.
