Sony made all kinds of outrageous claims about the PS2 and I think you’re just seeing the same trend with the PS3. There are so many unanswered questions. Pricing is unknown, but Merrill estimated the cost to Sony at $900+/unit, so even with the usual loss, this thing is going to be expensive. No pictures of an actual console have been seen. Virtually all the game demos Sony uses are pre-rendered and should thus be viewed with skepticism. At different points in time, Sony said it will come with and without a hard drive. Maybe I'm a little bit biased, b/c of my history of being fooled by sony in the past - clunky PS3 that works once in a while, now broken SCD-1 SACD player, useless assortment of minidisc players, PSP that has very few games, etc. There is growing consensus that the XBOX 360 and PS3 are about equal in gaming performance. The PS3 has a more powerful CPU but the XBOX 360 has a more powerful graphics card. The XBOX 360 gets loud when playing games (due to fans) but quiets down when playing DVDs or music. The way the PS3 mockups appear to be designed (very few visible vents), I wouldn't be surprised if the Sony console is just as if nosier than the XBOX 360.
The blueray standard has an adaptive encryption standard that gives the studios a lot of flexibity WRT on how their discs are used. This, and Sony's very bad history in terms of DRM schemes that end up frying customers' computers make me very wary of them. When even Microsoft decides to slightly back away from a standard because of over-aggressive content restrictions, it's time to be scared.
