There's been more debate on the highly thought of USB route. Apparently, thoughts along the lines of built in jitter control have not been correct.I just got the new Mac Mini today, the single core version. I've been playing around for quite a bit of time trying to get the airport from my notebook G4 to control the mini to the stereo.
What I've found is that there is no improved sound by using the analog out. I will be getting a sonicwave glass toslink cable this week and a new Lavry DA10.
I'm guessing that I will try both the direct optical out from the mac mini but I will also use the Apple Express optical out and compare. I think there won't be any difference or at least that's what my thought is now.
Then I'll use the optical out on the mini for an analog setup of media like quicktime movie trailers and maybe audio for DVD. Again, not enough time yet to test everything out.
But the automatic controls for iphotos and control of media is very, very cool. Especially hooked up to a 106" HD setup via Optoma H78DC3.
It's pretty impressive considering it's only running the 512 standard memory.
