I'm using an old Thinkpad T30 as a music server with an attached 250M USB hard drive. Using iTunes for Windows. Decided to purchase an external USB case and an internal DVD drive. After some research, I got the BenQ 1655 which according the CDRInfo has a superb CD reading performance. When I used this drive to import songs into iTunes, it would not work, unless I had the "error correction" box unchecked (which is supposely a "no-no"). I figure, maybe it is because the DVD drive has its own h/w based error correction. After ripping some bad CDs, I think this is indeed the case. Some songs rip at up to 34X and others will rip at 1.5X (some of these CDs would not work on a regular CD player). Thus, I think that with the proper DVD drive, error correction is already done at the drive.
In am also planning on streaming the music to an Airport Express and then from the optical out of the AE to a NOS DAC (DAC-AH). Thus avoiding any kind of upsampling since the AE can only support 44.1 (and the NOS can only support 44.1). Also, was able to get an optical cable with a mini Toshlink on one end and a regular Toshlink on the other (thus avoiding the "dreaded adapter")
