You might remember me from the post below about my bright speaker problem. Well, today I installed some 1959 Mullard 12AX7s in my McIntosh C2200 preamp...solved the problem. In fact, the whole system sounds remarkably better.Now, can someone explain to me, in rational terms, why replacing the tubes made such a huge difference? I wish there was some convenient way to A/B it, but because of the way my system is set up, removing the preamp from the rack to change tubes is a 45-minute operation.
Should mention that this is coming from someone who can't identify differences among speaker cables and interconnects, so this is likely to be a "real" change.Thanks for all your help--I think I'm satisfied, for the moment at least!
