Using the same speakers (95 dB) that I used with the M60 mk. II.2, I have noticed an improvement in inner detail, focus of voices, and imaging with a Cary 300SEI. As you probably noticed, it all falls apart when the 300B is pushed over it's power limits. The 300B tubes used also makes a huge difference, as I heard exactly what you describe with Western Electric 300Bs, but things opened up considerably in the highs and the bass became much better, on par with the M60, after a switch to Sophia 300Bs. Voices are simply THERE!
RE Al's follow-up, I also spent some time with the Antique Sound Labs 1006(845)DTs, the Absolute Sound Reviewers Choice Award winner. Great bass, stunning dynamics, and that renowned SET purity.
