Bryan,This is most likely a characteristic of your speakers. Atma-Sphere amps are among the least dynamically-challanged amps available. This means they have a low noise floor and are relatively free of distortion that increases as signal level diminishes. Transformer-coupled amps and transistor amps with low bias tend to have a distortion "floor" that overwhelms low but audible signals. These amps indeed sound better at high SPLs, where the detail is well above their inherently high distortion floor.
If you have speakers with multiple elements, be aware that the different drivers generally do not have uniform dynamic characteristics. There is typically one general playback SPL range where the drivers are well-matched; below this range the driver with a flatter dynamic response curve dominates, while above it the driver with a steeper response dominates. This changes the naturalness of timbre. Selecting the range of SPL for natural timbre is part of the process of "voicing" the speaker that the speaker designer performs.
Of course, other things contribute, and you should be sure your M-60s have well-balanced output tube complements (see my article in the FAQ section).
