ANY recording by Art Pepper on the Contemporary label is superb, in my experience. Thankfully, many of them have been re-done by Acoustic Sounds, etc. But the originals are just as good. Others that I listen to frequently include a recording by Johnny Hartman on the BeeHive label (can't recall the title but the sonics are to die for) and a Sinatra recording on Reprise: "FAS meets Antonio Carlos Jobim". Also the Stan Getz "Bossa Nova" recordings on Verve are unusually good for Verve. Most all Pablo's are excellent; I love the Sarah Vaughn collection on Pablo. Oddly, Carmen McRae's "Great American Songbook", 2-record album on Atlantic is exceptional, even though most all other Atlantics sound muddy to me. I recently heard the Ray Charles/Abby Lincoln "Porgy and Bess" recordings (in my collection but never before played by me), and I was floored. Can't recall the label. To listen for subtle differences in my system, I rely on the Hartman and Sinatra albums mentioned above, mainly because I love the music on them and know it well. Etc, etc.
