Re: Surge Suppressor

Alan,

Whether or not to add surge suppression is a personal decision we each must make and take responsibility for. No existing surge suppressor will provide protection against the worst possible overvoltage spikes. If I recommend a surge suppressor and you experience failure anyway, I would not have helped you. If I recommend no suppressor and you experience a failure from a smaller spike that a reasonable suppressor might have absorbed, I again would not have helped you. Therefore, I make no recommendation.

Some people report sonic degradation from the presence of MOV surge suppressors on the ac line (I don't have enough experience to confirm or refute this). These devices are consumed in operation, and may fail without indication so that protection may be lost when you think it is active. Certainly, the low cost, plug-in variety sold for computers and home entertainment equipment would compromise the ac power connection for your equipment.

There are whole-house surge suppressors with audible alarms, that are very expensive, require professional installation, and are reported to permit damaging surges to pass.

If you are concerned by your rural power situation, you may want to discuss this with a qualified electrician and do some experiments to see if you can hear any degradation from presence of MOV suppressors on your lines.

Good luck and let us know what you find.

-Al
