Yes, with the transformers in place, the input stage is then transformed into a differential pair because of the gain the transformers provide. There is no sacrifice in gain, in fact there's actually more.With all due respect, I can't imagine why I'd want to try an autoformer based volume control. Geesh! Four of the things? The existing control is superb.
