Lew is right, and Paul Speltz' site or he himself can give you lots of details.

From the engineering perspective, these are not at all in the same category as conventional output transformers found in tube amps. Output transformers are compromised by the need to have a very large impedance ratio, low capacitance, and low leakage flux, together with sufficient 'iron' in the core to handle the bass power.

I've been priviledged to listen to transformer core comparisons with SET amps run by the San Francisco audio club. There is a huge difference in the sound of the SAME amplifiers (rigged to allow quick output transformer swaps) driving the SAME speakers for the same impedance ratio transformers wound on different core materials.

Paul does not have to accomodate the large impedance ratio that these designs must meet, so he is free to optimize the autoformers for wide bandwidth.

No active or passive device is ideal, but the compromise with these autoformers appears to be in favor of matching Atma-Sphere (and many other amps with high output impedance) to low-impedance speakers.
