Re: User feedback on MP3...

Greg,

I can only comment from experience on MA-1s in a biamp setup. I used a Theta Miles CD player with balanced output and it was insufficient to drive the combination of MA-1s and Bryston 4B through their balanced or single-ended inputs. I blame the Bryston, as it has asymmetrical impedance loading in its balanced input format, but I had to use a preamp (old Berning TF-10, strictly single-ended) to make this setup work.

We upgraded to a Wadia 861 and the CD player's output stage is now more than adequate to drive the combination of amps directly.

The answer to your question depends on the output stage of your CD player. If you have money to spend and have no analog plans, I would go for a CD player with a beefy balanced output stage and avoid the preamp.

Be careful of volume controls in CD players: our Theta's 'analog' control caused significant degradation of the sound quality when engaged (a relay would disengage it at full volume, and the sound quality was much better), and you understand that simple digital controls throw away information to make the output voltage smaller. Also be careful of passive volume controls because they have critical cable interactions.

Be mindful of the input sensitivity of the M-60. If your CD player is single-ended, you will need 2.8 volts to get the M-60 to full power. Many single-ended CD player output stages are limited to 2.0 volts.
