George, did you use identical grill cloth? A lot of people have preferences on grill cloth materials, as they perceive differences in sound from their use.Also, did you disconnect and reconnect the speaker wires? Remaking oxidized connections could also explain the apparent improvement.
Your point is a good one, though. Even though I pride myself in trying to keep an open mind about a system, and looking through the appearance to the engineering qualities of components, I find there are some radical designs (like certain horn speakers painted with bold colors) that are too visually distracting to take seriously. It follows that the appearance of costly lapidary or cabinet craft work would appeal to some people as much or more than the sound.
