I'm had good success bypassing the output supply caps with 2 to 3 uF and bypassing the driver supply caps with 1 uF caps.The 5998 has a mu of 5.4, compared to 2 with the 6AS7G. It has been upgraded to 15 watts plate dissipation, compared to 13 with the 6AS7. Still, it doesn't like plate voltages must past 100 and still is not recommended in fixed bias service. I think you were wise passing on these tubes.
