Hey Mike: This is my public "thank you" for a terrific afternoon of listening to music.Mike lives in a great house/neighborhood with a very charming wife, Lucy, and three sons. I was made to feel welcome.
The listening room is really nice...warm, inviting, and manly. Just to my taste. Walking in, one would feel it might be a little overdamped what with the carpet and roomtunes, but one would be wrong. It has a good liveliness going for it.
But enough of the chitchat. Let's talk music and sound.
Frequency reponse: This is the only hybrid/electrostat I've heard where a good sub-woofer is not mandatory. Mike played the "Mephisto" disc that contains Dukas' "Sorcerer's Apprentice" and we had room shakin' bass. I was amazed, and this is coming from Mr. Sub-Woofer Guy. What was also interesting was how it blended seemlessly with the electrostatic element. No concerns here. I would talk more about the mid-range but there just isn't much to say, except, natural and neutral. It did not call attention to itself, but as Mike says in his very good review, it's the top that astounds. I think I managed to say the word "open" about 20 gazillion times. So much so that I thought Mike was going to have to reach for a single malt scotch in the middle of the day. But we managed to refrain from stimulants, except for the sound! (But, Hell, as my Dad used to say, it must be 5 o'clock SOMEWHERE!) The top does seem to go on forever with plenty of delicate overtones. If someone asked me to compare the SoundLabs M2 with this Eros, I'd have to say the Eros has more extension, both low and high.
Imaging: Again, not a lot to say, I was so taken with the overall presentation. It certainly was not recessed as I have heard with so many other speakers. It seemed quite natural, in fact. Very much like the "big picture" I enjoy with my Magneplanars.
Dynamics: Whoa! This was horn territory. We played the system "at level", that is to say, UP. No strain, but plenty of gain. I had the feeling that the Eros could play way louder in that room than human ears need to hear. It was real easy to turn it up, you had nothing to fear.
You know, when you hear a system you're not familiar with, you wonder what it is exactly that you're hearing. The M60s just HAD to be contributing mightily to that "open" feeling at the top, not to mention the MP-3, the Cary CD and Gyrodek TT/Benz cartridge. All I know is everything sounded damn good.
Well, that's my take. Thanks again, Mike, and when I get my Magneplanared Marchand X-over, you WILL be coming over.
