An interesting idea. It sounds like you already know that you CANNOT just plug a 5687 into the 12AU7 socket, because the two tube types use different basing (i.e., the pins are configured differently). Also, the 5687 likes more current vs the 12AU7 and there are other electrical differences that would mandate changing resistors, etc. Finally, it's debatable whether the 5687 is a categorically "better" tube than the 12AU7. I'm still using 12AU7s in the linestage of my MP1 (even though the rest of the pre-amp is pretty much in "Mark II" status), and I am surprised myself how great this tube can sound. (I had some NOS Amperex Bugleboys in a 25-year-old stash of tubes, and that's what I am using.) There ARE plug-in substitutes for the 12AU7 that some recommend highly, if you want to play around without re-building your linestage: 5814A, 5963(?), and Amperex 7316, for examples.
