I know the LED well, Lew. I have yet to have one burn out myself.The circuit is very simple. It's nothing more than an LED in series with a 47 volt zener and another resistor to limit current. This whole string is across the A.C. line. I wonder if your 47 volt zener has gone the way of the short? Perhaps the limiting resistor has lowered itself to another level. Your Ohmmeter should tell you something. You can also measure the voltage across the limiting resistor, to determine current through the LED. I'll bet it should be under 10 mA.
Yes, you could use a miniature 120 VAC incandescent. It will probably be too bright, but a series resistor should do the trick. It's been my experience that lamps like these aren't too reliable. On no. Not again!
