if you are going to rebuild an ST-170, why not rebuild it as a PP2A3? the stock OPTs have a primay Z of 6K6, just about right for the 2A3. Uncle Ned at Triode Electronics has some info along with a good driver stage modification, and if you like the results, Mike LeFevre at MagneQuest has drop-in replacement OPTs. Remember that Paul Klipsch voiced the original K-Horns in 1948 with a Brook PP2A3.As to you general question, ANY pure triode is superior (more linear) to any pentode, even a triode-wired pentode, IMO. If you are not a DIYer and aren't ready to go for the Atmas yet, go for George's 2A3s - way better and far better resale value.
