Found a source of hum and how to fix it.

I've found hum from an unexpected source. This may be unique to structures with metal wall-stud construction. Above a certain load the AC wires in my walls emit 60 Hz hum, or perhaps the current induces the metal studs to vibrate at 60 Hz. The Atma-Sphere M-60 amplifiers alone don't cause this, but add the MP-3 preamp plus source components at the same outlet and loud hum is audible with an ear pressed to the wall. From the center of the room it seems to have no direction and it's easy to assume hum is coming from the speakers.

Since I have everything plugged into a power conditioner, the load for the whole system falls to one outlet. Dividing the load between two circuits is one solution. For now I've run the power cord to a 20 amp outlet in the kitchen. Quiet! For a more permanent fix I'll install 20 amp dedicated service to the listening room.
