I have been asking that question of myself and others ever since I was made aware of the plate resistor mod. I totally agree with you that the logic is not evident, at least at my primitive level of understanding. It would seem that one would require much higher value resistors to effect better current-sharing among the output tubes and that such resistors would have an unacceptable effect of increasing output impedance. One of our expert contributors told me that the resistors ACT as if they were of much higher value in-circuit. I am guessing this is an effect known as "bootstrapping". But why that may occur in the circlotron output circuit, I haven't a clue.
But may I ask you a question? Do I understand you to say that you performed the mod (albeit with lower-than-recommended value resistors) and that you did measure a decrease in distortion and hear an improvement in overall sound quality, with no penalties?
